Upgrading the railway in the Wessex and South Coast area

Network Rail is carrying out infrastructure improvements as well as essential maintenance of the region's railway to help provide better and faster journeys.

Rail improvement work is planned on the Heart of Wessex route serving Weymouth.

This is for track renewal and essential maintenance to be carried out by Network Rail to help maintain rail connections between Somerset and Dorset.

Signalling and track upgrades are also taking place that will affect trains in the Southampton and Portsmouth areas.

Impact on train services

The impact on Great Western Railway services will be as follows:

Rail improvement work will affect the following train services:

  • Castle Cary to Weymouth – Monday 23 to Sunday 29 September

Important to note

South Western Railway will be starting work to redevelop the forecourt area at Salisbury station during April with reduced parking available.

Don’t forget, space is limited on buses/coaches compared to trains, so please don’t bring:
  • large items of luggage
  • bikes (excluding folding bikes)
  • dogs (excluding assistance dogs)

Pushchairs must be folded up and stored as luggage.
